History
Preparation and
planning for the Taipei Cultural Center began
in April 1961 and the center was formally established as the
Taipei Municipal Social Education Hall in January 1964.
Dedicated to serving the citizens of Taipei City,
the Taipei Cultural Center has organized many social education activities with
a range of services which has constantly expanded over the past
few years.With the establishment of the Cultural
Bureau on November 6 1999, the Center was
transferred from the Education Department to the Cultural Bureau, and has begun to focus more on
promotion of art and cultural activities. In the future, the
Taipei Cultural Center pledge to continue to provide the best service possible for
the citizens of our city. |

¡EIn April
1961 the
Taiwan Provincial Government set up a preparatory committee
under the Education Department of the Taipei
City Government to take charge of the establishment of Taipei
Municipal Social Education Hall under the direction of the
Hsinchu Provincial Social Education Hall. |

¡EIn January
1964 the Taipei Municipal Social Education Hall was officially
established and began operation in a borrowed
location in the Chung-Shan Building (now the Chung-Shan Market) of
Taipei. |

¡EIn January
1966 the Taipei Municipal Social Education Hall borrowed the
Ming-Lun Hall from Confucius Temple as its
provisional location and began the planning a leisure activity space for
citizens. |
|
¡EIn 1967, with
the organizational restructuring of the Taipei City
Government, the Taipei Municipal Social Education Hall
became independent of the guidance of Hsinchu Provincial Social Education
Hall, and underwent a significant expansion
in budget, equipment, and staff. |

¡EIn 1976 the Taipei
Municipal Social Education Hall decided to construct its own
offices at the planned site of
Municipal Park No. 5. The construction work commenced in
March 1979 and was completed in June 1983. The new location
was officially opened to the public on October 22 of the same year. |

¡EIn February
1987 the Taipei Municipal Social Education Hall set up an
affiliate center, the Yen-Ping Activity Center, on the 9th
floor of the Yen-Ping Administration Building, to take charge
of the promotion of folk art activities. |
|
¡EOn November
6 1999, the Taipei Municipal Social Education Hall underwent
organizational restructuring and was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Cultural Bureau, with its
official English name designated by the City Government as
Taipei Cultural Center. |
